PA AMB OLI

If there’s a dish that’s easy, typical and that any authentic Majorcan dinner doesn’t fall to include, that is “pa amb oli”. Its main ingredients are brown bread, “ramallet” tomatoes (a local type of tomato), virgin olive oil and salt of your choice. It can be served with Serrano ham, pâté, Mahon cheese, cold meat, “camaiot” or sobrasada, Mallorcan olives or hot green peppers. Have you tried it yet?

MAJORCAN FRY-UP

The “frito mallorquín” (Majorcan fry-up) is one of the iconic dishes within the Balearic cuisine. In its most traditional form, it’s made of lamb roast with potatoes, peas, “sofrit” (Balearic type of chives), red pepper and fennel. This is one of the most traditional recipes in Majorcan cuisine, dating back to the 14th century.

TUMBET

Tumbet is a Majorcan recipe made with seasonal vegetables typical of the Majorcan garden which is served either by itself or as a garnish for meat, fish or with a fried egg. It’s made of a mixture of various vegetables (aubergines, red peppers, potatoes…) with a layer of tomato sauce. It is cooked in a clay pot, commonly called “greixonera” in the island.

ENSAIMADA

The “ensaimada” is one of those things that need no introduction. There might be some doubt on whether it’s a sweet or salty, but everyone knows it comes from Majorca and it has become an island icon. It makes a delicious breakfast, although it turns a snack into a special occasion and it’s one of the best desserts to end lunch or dinner with friends.

It comes in different sizes and flavours, classic or stuffed with cream, black or white chocolate, quince jam, and even in some places they’re made with Kinder Bueno or Ferrero Rocher stuffing. When combined with almond ice cream, it will become your undoing.

ALMOND ICE CREAM

And as we’ve already talked about almonds, all that’s left is to turn it into ice cream. This is one of the desserts that you should try and combine with a slice of delicious “ensaimada”. You won’t regret it! We recommend you to try it out at Ca’n Miquel, in Palma.

CARDENAL DE LLOSETA

A typical dessert from the municipality of Lloseta, soft and delicate, similar to eating a piece of cloud. You will find it at ‘Forn des Baix’.

The name of this cake came up 60 years ago during a meal amongst friends of the owners of the Majorcan bakery. One of them said: “This is a bocatto di Cardinale”, referring to the cake; so, over the years, this “sweet cloud” kept the name of the cardinal who never existed, but who finally stuck with the cake’s name.

COCA DE TRAMPÓ

The “coca de trampó” or “trempó” is one of the most typical and traditional dishes of the Balearic cuisine and, more specifically, of Majorca. It consists of a salty flatbread, called “coca”, with a “trampó” on top.

The “trampó” is a vegetable salad (onions, peppers and tomatoes) seasoned with olive oil and salt, typical of the island. You will find this coca in almost all the bakeries on the island, even so we recommend the ones in Ca Sa Camena in the neighborhood of Santa Catalina (Palma).

COCA DE PATATA

The famous “coca de patata” is a sweet you must try if you want to start the day in a tasty and sugary way. You can have this sweet, light and very spongy bun as a summer snack with almond ice cream and for breakfast with hot chocolate or coffee with milk.

Ca’n Molinas: in this place that has both indoors and a terrace you can enjoy the well-known ‘cocas de patata’ and an endless number of sweets, each one more delicious than the last.
